Centennial, Colorado

Centennial is Colorado’s newest city with a population of over 100,000.  It is located in the south suburban metro area, entirely within Arapahoe County.  In fact, until 2001 all of Centennial was a part of unincorporated Arapahoe County with addresses, based on respective Post Office locations, of Littleton, Englewood or Aurora.

Residents were led into voting for the incorporation in order to avoid a commercial property annexation by adjacent Greenwood Village with the promise by the promoters that this new city could be established with very limited tax increases.  Several tax increases later that was proven to be the lie that only a few recognized at the time.  Taxes are not appreciably higher than other cities, but certainly higher than if the area had remained a part of the County.

You can see by the map that not everyone affected voted to be included so the city has some very unusual borders, particularly in the eastern areas.  The majority of the land area and population are (W-E) between Broadway and I-25 and (N-S) between Orchard and County Line Road.  This area of Centennial offers great convenience to DTC offices, good access to downtown via roads or light rail and the well the respected Littleton and Cherry Creek school districts.  Some of the areas to the east offer similar convenience with all of these neighborhoods in the Cherry Creek School District.

Single family homes in the west portion of Centennial will typically be above $250,000 with less expensive homes in the northeast portion of the city.
